My creative decisions have been most successful when I’m driven by concepts. When I work, I think about the general lay out and what I would like my work to look like. I mainly do pencil/color pencil drawings, I also combine that with photography to make my desired images and points of reference. Currently I’ve become interested in drawing hands alone, I like to think about how they are positioned and how they are being expressive. Since they aren’t attached to a person to give you more information you get the hand alone to express who the person is, what they are feeling and what they’ve done. My works has become very personal which is why hands have become a part of my interest as they are so anonymous that I can express my own thoughts without having to be direct, but I’m working on keeping the concepts broad enough so that people can relate to it or be able to understand it without needing much to be explained, so that I can give the viewer room to interpret.

My influence in art begins with my mother, although she didn’t teach me about it she began my interest by introducing it to me, if I think about it maybe art was the way I reconnected with her after the few years my brother and I grew up without her. She loves it but essentially stopped, even though she stopped it encourages me to pursuit even if I am doubtful. My influence in art also began with Anime I loved the different art styles of creators as well as the unique story telling combined with music that made me feel some pretty heavy emotions, I just loved the impact of it. Drawing some characters that I liked Influenced my focus on the smallest of details since I always tried to draw the characters exactly like what they looked like. Artist I find interesting now are artists like DaVinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Albrecht Duerer, Hieronymus Bosch, Rembrandt, Andre Masson, Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama, and recently Chiharu Shiota. They have some similar subjects I’m interested in but a lot these artists a super different to the work that I focus on which I see at rather structured. What I like most about their work is that even if it may be structured to a degree, they let their art breathe, be playful and open, in the end, it takes its own form.

For now, the work that I do has really been to find myself within art and for me to begin connecting with my emotions, memories and inner thoughts. I may be filled with doubt about what my art is and looks like, but there is no doubt to me loving it and wanting to explore it. In a way I want to feel freed by the work that I make and let my art have its freedom as well, in a sense that I want it to be expressive and unexpected to what I originally intended.

  I make it so that I can connect with people in a way that I don’t need words. I’ve never been able to communicate with others too well or express openly my thoughts and emotions unless it was with art. I want people to feel that, so that they can feel a sense of relieve and that they don’t have to bottle up their own thoughts and emotions. So much happens in the world around us that is just so much bigger than the individual I feel we end up feeling rather small and placeless, which Is why I also do art to remind my self that others can feel the same and it’s important to express the thoughts within us so that others can too. I make art because it can be impactful. Despite what other people think its not “Just a drawing”, “just an image”, art is not “easy,” It takes work and initiative, its more than something “pretty.” Art has many forms and that is why it is beautiful, thus is why I do art because in the future I believe either conceptually or medium wise, it shall transform, and that’s something I look forward to.sdp

For the final project I want to focus on the idea of feeling a disconnection within oneself, it could represent a physical disconnection, emotional, mentally as well as cultural. The focus is of how feeling disconnected of something personal can affect one’s self and have a conflict with one’s identity and how that would make it difficult to feel a sense of belonging and or purpose. Although I want people to get those different aspects they can relate to I want to focus mainly on feeling discounted emotionally and culturally and how that shapes my own perspective of who I am and how that makes it difficult to feel purposeful as well as how it feels difficult to feel in a way complete. The main imagery of the Project would be a disconnection between the body and different elements that will represent emotions and culture. I want to do an installation again since I want to focus on a strong image, I liked the idea of making a cast again like I did with the face of my previous work but this time a fuller cast of a body that’s not complete and connected to other things around it but not interacting fully, I would also like to use video but Im also thinking of just using sound to enhance an unsettling feeling. I want to explore the idea of the self, identity and culture. I was inspired by Kim June Paik and his work Ommah for his work he combined a known cultural image and a tv screen playing with two very different images and making the viewer feel frustrated at what the robe does not let them see. What I get from it was that by trying to view what’s behind like the idea aspect the viewer is avoiding the other icon Infront of it. I interpret it as a way of conflict between culture and society/technology although he was heading a different direction from the description. I thought it would be an interesting idea to see it from another perspective or similar as well.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK “Ommah”

“In Ommah, a traditional robe that might have been worn by a well-off Korean boy some 100 years ago hangs nearest to the viewer. Through its lightweight silk, images on an LCD TV monitor can be seen, but not without the irritation of a moiré pattern caused by the interplay of the two “screens.” The monitor plays a program lasting several minutes and looping continuously. Three Korean American girls in traditional costumes dance, play ball, beat a drum, and ride in a toy car, seemingly carefree but carefully choreographed by Paik. The back-ground imagery includes close-up views of early video games, footage from TV shows, and material from Global Groove, the video Paik made for WNET-TV in 1974, all manipulated using a high-tech version of the color video synthesizer Paik coinvented around 1970. The music includes ambient sounds of the studio, both straight and processed, and snippets from Paik’s own experimental music tapes of the 1950s.

As stable and iconic as this cruciform work appears, our physically moving before it is vital as we pass back and forth, trying to peer through or around the robe. Paik attacked the passivity that he felt television imposed on viewers. Through endless play with the medium, he reclaimed the “boob tube” as an expressive, democratic tool. A Fluxus-inspired trickster crossing high culture with low, Paik never lost the homemade, improvised quality of his earliest experiments.”

In the day overall i think that its a really nice spot to see the sun setting and you get a nice view of downtown, but its a spot that everything is happening quickly, everyone’s busy so no one really stops. I think that a lot of land has been built on so there isn’t a lot of nature to the area making it pretty dull and square i would say.

I wanted to use organic shapes as well as use the natural lighting that hits really well on that spot . I’m a fan of Glass Blowing really the people who can do that are amazing, so I thought the project should be the focus of it specially since you can give glass very organic shapes. I chose light color and smooth colors so that it wouldn’t be distracting since obviously people are driving, I also thought that it would be interesting to see how the light would effect the glass since I also don’t want it to be too reflective. For the structure of it I thought about the glass hanging like water droplets which is how I wanted to design it as well. I thought about it like a clear open tunnel with transparent string to hang the glass. Not too sure about the materials for the structure since it needs to be sturdy and durable, and hold lots of weight, but I don’t want the structure to be too much of the focus. Im looking for transparency so you can still see out and so that the space doesn’t feel caged.

From the reading It got me thinking a lot more about the different pieces that make up for context. I did think of context as background of artwork, to explain it and make since of it to the viewer, but it also got me thinking about the context that comes from me and how that affected by the way its presented and that translation to the viewer. So i found the different forms of context to be interesting.

The chapter mentioned, viewing context, internal context, artistic context, social context and Historical context. Each had their own individual effect on the outcome of the work. The formula mentioned was also interesting Subject Matter+ Medium+ Form+ Contexts= Meanings I think that it fits the idea of meaning because i do think its fairly easy to miscommunicate if something is out of place. Since we have a lot of personal context and ouside context around us its important to make sure what we want people to get from it be a bit clear. like it said about the flag on the floor people will be affended by it despite artistic intent people its already seen as one specific thing.

I found it interesting how the place of viewing and the things around the work can affect its context, it just shows that there are some specifics that need to be considered. I liked that it said everything in a work of art is altered by anything else in it. I usually think about exerting as a whole when it comes to art work like, ” this leads to this, this matches this, or this is all meant to be looked as a whole.” But hearing about internal context I thought about how each individual piece could potentially affect the other. Like the medium, I thought about the materials I want to use but what will the material I choose do to the meaning of the piece as a whole and the individual pieces within it. Over all I’m thinking about context as more than background information leading to the making of the piece and it contents, that’s really just a part of it.

I went to the exhibit and found a few images interesting mainly the ones with simple changes because being outbof your comfort zone can be as simple as that. I thought the concept behind the images was great because so much could be done with it, as for the performance i feel like the way it was recorded was distracting, my attention kept going out the then people walking then back to the middle. So i would rather see it being done than a recording, that would be my own preference.
