Unit 2 Performance for the Camera

For the performance I had fun figuring out how exactly to set up the scenes in order do them myself. Being in front of the camera not so much fun, yet i understood a bit more about performing with some scenes that i related so much and said so much of my self that i almost forgot about the camera and aas easier to perform. I think those moments were nice, where it felt natural. Although it was embarrassing i tried to express my feelings and my mother’s feeling of what its like to be an illegal immigrant. The scences begging from her perperctive to later my experiences and thoughts. Throught the projects i switched things a bit, my first performance i momeved around a lot and had lots of other things happening but i found it distracting, I tried to cut a lot of unnecessary scenes for this second recording which is why it may look choppy, but hopefully it doesn’t feel too long and boring.

“Christine Sun Kim” by Todd Selby – NOWNESS

From watching the video, it made me think a lot about the way that we process art, the way we deliver it and the way that we translate it. With Sum Kim I found it interesting how she originally thought of sound. For example, when she was saying that people that could hear had some king of ownership of sound, that she had to be respectful of their sound, and that sound was in their possession. I hadn’t really notice that, because when we think about it, when we are in public space, we try to be quiet or get annoyed when someone is rowdy or eating loud, because they are disrupting our sound, and in a way our space.

She said that she didn’t want to know what sound was but wanted to learn and find meaning through her experiences. With her performance I liked that she wants to reclaim her possession of sound and wants us not to just hear but see sound as well. I think that is exactly what we get through her performance. We get to see her sound associated in a different manner, it’s as if it no longer becomes our knowledge of sound, but rather we are getting a different intake of sound throughout her experiences.

Her way of approaching her performance, it made me think that there is not a single and set form in the way that we depict things. We can also disconnect meaning by making something take another form, which we end up deciding what form that would be. like she said, it was a loose translation of sound into another form, and in a lot of ways it just made me think what is sound or anything, and how do we define it?  Her way of processing and receiving sound was through the different materials and setups she connected to her recordings. Her art became the experiments done for her to experience sound, and for others it became a bigger picture or seeing and hearing someone elses depiction of sound.

Chapter 6 Reading

From the reading I found interesting at how the usage of time and space can really change the way we view any form of artwork, specially when it comes to interacting with it and being part of its space. It can drastically change the way that we view and interpret the art work, whether it comes to looking with our eyes or being encouraged to physically interact with it . overall I think that the idea of becoming part of the artwork when you interact with it is very interesting.

I also found interesting that we can use these elements in any forms of art, specially when they talked about painting or drawings, they show how we can imply motion and really think about the usage of it within its space. I like the idea of playing with the senses and creating an illusion of motion. it can really depend on the decisions that we make with pieces of our art work. Placement, shapes, color and so on can be very important when wanting to create such interpretations of movement. Movement can have alot of uses in art, which I honestly hadn’t fully thought about. I like that this reading makes you thinks about different elements in art that are more than what you see.

Stop Motion Videos

This was the first Stop Motion trial, I thought that it would be interesting to show the flower and the thing on it moving by the wind sort of peaceful. The video was not right at all I moved a lot with each shot and that’s what make it just look messy and moves all over so it was more violent than peaceful. Getting used to the app I see what I need to work on, such as making sure I take the shot at the same spot so that not everything is moving around and just looks odd.
I took more time with this video. I tried different ways to make the paper move around but some shots were pretty difficult so I tried to make the end a bit more simple, it still took time to make since it was difficult to get the ending as precise as possible. I think it was an improvement from the first trial.
Last was the experimental video. Was trying to make it look like the clip was running up.
